Attractions in Sevastopol - Malakhov Hill

Malakhov Hill (spelling variant – Malakoff) is located on the Ship Side (Korabelnaya Side) of Sevastopol.  Nowadays Malkhov is a memorial park honoring the events of the Crimean and the Second world wars. Standing apart from the busy streets and traditional souvenir stalls, park of Malakhov hill is a lovely quiet place for a walk. At the entrance of the hill there is an observation point with a panoramic view of the city. At least 20 monuments and memorial slabs devoted to the first (the Crimean war) and the second (WWII) defenses of Sevastopol are located in the park.

One of the oldest parks of the city, Malakhov Hill dominates the center and surroundings. Due to its dominating position (97 meters / 318 feet above sea level), Malakhov hill had a vital importance during the Crimean and WWII wars.

Being the main target for besiegers in the Crimean war, Malakhov hill was a witness of the heaviest fighting.  The battle of Malakhov that took place on June 18, 1855 is depicted in the famous Panorama painting “The Defense of Sevastopol 1854-1855”.      

The most significant attractions of the park are monuments of the Crimean War – the White Defensive Tower, the Monument to Admiral Kornilov, cannons of the Crimean war, common grave to Russian and French soldiers. There are monuments to the WWII – ship guns of Matukhin’s battery, monument to the Soldiers of VIIIth Army.

Malakhov Hill is in 4 km (2,4 miles) eastwards from the center of Sevastopol. You can reach it by taking marshrutka (a public van) No 107, 17, 7, trolleybuses No 7, 17 or buses No 17 a, 107.
