Attractions in Sevastopol - Top Secret Submarine Pen / Base – Object 825

Military engineering construction of submarine plant is located on the western shore of Balaclava bay, it is 15 minutes walk from the centre of Balaclava.

“Object 825 GTS”, as it was known in the Soviet times, was a highly confidential submarine plant used as a dock for repairing and servicing of diesel and atomic submarines. Building works started in 1957 in the Cold War times, and were completed in 1961.

The plant was hollowed out in the rocky mountain, on the shore of the Balaclava bay and covered by 56 meters of concrete. Self-contained complex of air, water and fuel supply was invented to maintain works in the plant for 3 years.  Heavy metal doors of 1 meter thick would close in case of atomic attack. The plant was designed to survive a direct nuclear strike up to 100 kilotons.

The base included dry dock, repairing workshops, torpedoes and weapon stores. It  has two entrances leading to Balaclava bay, so the submarines might enter and leave the base undiscovered.
